Review by Chloe Morris.

Filled to the brim with raspy vocals and emotive lyrics, Tom Grennan delivered an intimate acoustic performance in Bristol ahead of his upcoming album release Everywhere I Went, Led Me to Where I Didn’t Want to Be. His hour-long set at The Prospect Building had the whole room deep in their feels.

Casually walking onto the stage in a T-shirt and jeans, Grennan skipped any elongated instrumental introduction, and instead opened the show with a warm, laid-back chat with the crowd. He took his time greeting the audience and shared what his new album means to him before launching into his hit Full Attention. The crowd responded instantly, echoing the lyrics to him with enthusiasm.

In this stripped-back setting, the clarity and rawness of his voice shone through, highlighting just how powerful his vocals truly are.

The simplicity of the set was something to be admired as all focus was on the music. For most of the evening, Grennan was accompanied by a guitarist and two exceptional backing vocalists, creating a rich yet understated sound. But when it came time for I Won’t Miss a Thing, they quietly stepped off stage, leaving Grennan alone at the piano.

The result was spellbinding. The entire room stood in awe as the intimate ballad washed over them, offering the warmth and comfort of a hug. This stripped-back moment created a rare connection, pulling the crowd fully into Grennan’s presence and artistry.

The venue proved the perfect match for the evening’s atmosphere. The large, open space of The Prospect Building offered a resonant acoustic that complemented Grennan’s voice beautifully. He also paused to shout out the importance of independent venues, saying:

“Venues like this are so important for artists like us, so important for communities, so important for the arts, so important to so many people. And when we are all together singing – that is peace of mind, and that is beautiful.”

Overall, Tom is like the warm ray of sunshine you wait for on a rainy day. His powerful vocals pull you in, but his lyricism tells a story of vulnerability lying just beneath the surface.

There is a sense of rawness to his voice – one that simply cannot be replicated. Grennan doesn’t just make you listen; he makes you feel, hitting you with the sheer force of his music.

I have vivid memories of setting up a makeshift studio in my garage, using bedsheets and rope with LED lights purchased off Amazon, getting my sister and friends to model for me. This sparked my creative flare and made me want to learn how to turn my passion into a full-time job. Looking forward, I have high aspirations for my work, I’m currently working towards becoming a full-time freelance photographer, shooting events and portraits, and showcasing to other female photographers, it’s possible to make it in this heavily male dominated industry, inspiring young women who are currently building their make shift studios with their bedsheets and rope.
