It’s 10 steps forward and no steps back for Alex Spencer, as the path of a new era unfurls before him. With the release of his latest EP, Where Do We Go From Here?, Spencer has once again taken the indie scene by storm. The EP consists of 5 tracks, and features fan-favourites such as Wake Me Up, Clouded Thinking, and Bucket List, in addition to two brand new songs: Where Do We Go From Here? and Pessimistic Nobody. Each track is strong and distinct, showcasing its own unique energy while still tying seamlessly into the overall sound and mood of the record.
Following the success of his latest single, Clouded Thinking, Spencer announced the release date of his second studio EP: Where Do We Go From Here?
Published ten days ago on the 13th of June, the EP has been met with an overwhelmingly positive response – especially towards the two previously unheard songs. It marks a significant turning point in Spencer’s career, as we are invited to observe the shift from his earlier, more juvenile writing, as he ventures into a more mature and contemplative sound. The project delves deeply into the tumultuous transition from adolescence into adulthood, perhaps a reflection of Spencer’s own inner turmoil as he navigates this new chapter, having just recently turned 18.

At 18, it often feels like the world is both working against us and is entirely within our grasp. It’s a time marked by an overwhelming uncertainty, where the crushing weight of expectation collides with the thrill of possibility. Darker and moodier than previous works, Spencer’s EP captures this threshold perfectly – the raw, in-between feeling of standing at the brink of adulthood. Spencer channels a surprisingly mature sound through each track, taking on a carpe diem approach and urging listeners to get through life one day at a time. His artistic growth is undeniable; striking and deeply emotive vocals alongside sincere songwriting, allows his work to masterfully walk the line between upbeat and contemplative.
Clouded Thinking opens the EP with a moody, introspective tone that sets the stage for what’s to come. The track’s atmosphere, alongside Spencer’s delicate phrasing, captures the emotional disarray of innocence and the harsh reality of the world. Spencer attempts, and succeeds, to mirror the mindset of an 18-year-old standing at the edge of adulthood. The title track, Where Do We Go From Here? follows, unfolding into an existential reflection: ‘Are we just skin and bones or is life a bigger picture?’. The tune explores the tension between fearing the future and longing to embrace it, as the subject comes to terms with the fragility of life and the inevitability of death, “Ya no temo a la muerte” (‘I no longer fear death’). Despite being completely unheard, Pessimistic Nobody has quickly claimed the title of fan-favourite following the release of the EP. Spencer really strips himself back for this track, trading his usual upbeat energy for a slower, melancholic sound capturing the disorientation of navigating adulthood.

Bucket List and Wake Me Up bookend the EP with vibrant, guitar-driven optimism. These final tracks serve as a reminder that growth isn’t linear. There is joy and hope even when uncertainty seems prevalent. Though their lyrics touch on dreams, doubts, and pressure, they ultimately celebrate the resilience and restlessness of youth.
Life is primarily about ‘Seeing the world and making memories together’ with the people you love. These closing tracks bring the EP to an uplifting and inspiring finish.
Spencer stresses that growing up isn’t something to fear, but a journey to embrace; the EP serving as a reminder that every moment is worth living fully and intentionally.
This five-song journey leaves you contemplating your own next steps, perfectly echoing the question ‘Where do we go from here?’
