Few artists have experienced as many highs and lows as Mae Muller. From uploading original tracks to SoundCloud in 2017, and landing a record deal the following year, to featuring on Gold-certified hit Better Days, and performing her fun, pop-heavy Eurovision anthem I Wrote A Song to over 160 million viewers across Europe – only to receive just nine public votes and finish second-to-last – Mae’s journey has been anything but predictable. After parting ways with her record label last year, Muller now stands at a turning point in her career, where she’s her most confident and authentic self yet – something evident at her headline gig at Oslo Hackney at the beginning of the month.
Kicking off her set with a spoken intro, Mae stood waiting behind the curtain while the pre-recorded message greeted the crowd, addressing how long it had been since she last saw her fans, and expressing how grateful she is for their continued support. Then, Mae stepped out in all her glory. Her fans screamed with excitement as the songstress began her ego-boosting track Hello Kitty. As she belted out the lyrics “Now I’m back and I’m ready to play”, it was clear after time away working on herself, she’s now ready for the big time – but this time, on her own terms.

Mae stunned the crowd with her ethereal vocals, and her angelic outfit – a layered corseted ensemble, blending different textures: lace and satin. Her vibe was joyous, feminine, and carefree – and it seems after splitting with her label she’s more herself.
“Tonight was a way for me to celebrate, I guess, my journey in music…’
‘…as you can tell, the setlist, sonically, is a little all over the place, because she’s done a lot of genres, right?!” Mae joked with the crowd, “But I love all of them!”

The North Londoner continued through tracks that spanned her career, including 2019’s Anticlimax, and Jenny, before debuting a fabulous unreleased song, titled Pub Quiz, giving fans a sneak peek into what’s next for Mae. It’s a song describing the feeling when you want to let go of everything, and when you don’t want to tie yourself down, instead trusting the process and realising that it will all work out in the end: ‘I’ll figure it out/figure it out/I will, I will, I will’. It’s a fun, infectious pop song that the fans adored. Don’t just take my word for it – after the track, she asked the crowd ‘Did you like that one?!” to which they screamed full of joy.

A highlight of the night was when Mae brought out girl band friends Say Now on the stage to perform Brick by Brick with her. The moment was completely unexpected, which made it even more exciting. Mae began by talking about how she’d been writing for other musicians, and how she got her first songwriting credit recently with Say Now. With that in mind, she decided to sing the track she received her first credit with – Brick by Brick – but when it came to the chorus, a new voice could be heard through the speakers. Mae jokingly looked confused, as if she didn’t know what was happening, and then the coin dropped – the band rushed out to sing with her, and fans screamed in shock.

Mae came up close with each of her fans throughout the night. Due to the nature of the gig, it felt more like a catch up with friends as it was so intimate – something definitely welcomed by the fans, and I can only imagine by Mae too.
After performing hit after hit, including Me, Myself & I, Therapist, and now Eurovision-classic I Wrote A Song, Mae culminated her set on infectious bop In My Head, where the crowd and Mae partied one last time before the gig ended.
