With influences from Radiohead, Joy Division, and New Order, Panchiko made a triumphant return to an enthusiastic crowd at Saint Luke’s, Glasgow, on 26th of March.

A highly anticipated, sold-out gig, had fans singing along to the band’s unique indie rock, pop and electronic sound as they promote their latest album, Ginkgo, recently released on the 4th of April.

Formed in Nottingham during the late 1990s, Panchiko was a group of high school friends, Owain Davies (vocals, guitar), Andrew ‘Andy’ Wright (guitar, keyboard), Shaun Ferreday (bass), and a drummer named John. Their journey continued when the band made a comeback, with John Schofield replacing the original drummer, and Robert ‘Rob’ Harris joining as a guitarist.

Panchiko gained a cult-like following after their 2000 demo EP, D>E>A>T>H>M>E>T>A>L, which was rediscovered in an Oxfam charity shop, and shared online in 2016 by a 4Chan user, creating a worldwide search for the creators of the album. This serendipitous event led to their reformation in 2020 and a series of live performances that have captivated audiences worldwide.

During their performance, Panchiko delighted the crowd with fan favourites, Laputa, All They Wanted, and of course, D>E>A>T>H>M>E>T>A>L, while also performing tracks from their newer albums, with Honeycomb standing out as a crowd-pleaser. The band’s signature lo-fi aesthetics and emotive melodies resonated throughout Saint Luke’s, creating an immersive experience that matched perfectly with the venue.

The band were supported by Mei Semones from Brooklyn, New York, whose Jazz/Indie fusion was a delight to hear, with songs from her new album, such as Dumb Feelings, wowing the crowd. Her newest album, Animaru, is set to release this May.

Panchiko’s performance at Saint Luke’s was a triumphant blend of nostalgia and fresh energy. Their seamless mix of old classics and newer material demonstrated the band’s growth while staying true to their distinctive sound. The emotional connection between the band and the audience was undeniable, with heartfelt singalongs and energetic applause throughout the night.

The EU/UK tour is set to conclude in their hometown, Nottingham on the 13th of April, before they begin their US tour in Boston, Massachusetts on the 28th of May.
