Snow Patrol made a triumphant return to the stage at the OVO Hydro, performing in front of thousands of fans to promote their latest album, The Forest is the Path, released late last year. This highly anticipated release marked the band’s return after a six-year hiatus from new music, sparking excitement and anticipation among their loyal fanbase.

The Northern-Irish band began their set with a lively performance of Take Back the City, a single from their fifth studio album. The upbeat song energised the crowd and reflected Gary Lightbody’s affection for Belfast.

After an enthusiastic opening, Lightbody takes a nostalgic trip down memory lane, recalling the band’s humble beginnings at the University of Dundee, and their subsequent move to Glasgow, where they spent the next ten years.

He expressed that the band felt like they had “come home,” humorously mentioning the poor weather conditions they encountered upon their arrival.

Snow Patrol reminded the audience that they definitely aren’t new to this, with their impressive crowd work, humour, and inside jokes—even teasing that they won’t be playing ‘that one’ (referencing their record-breaking hit, Chasing Cars). The band created an intimate environment, which can be a challenge, especially in larger venues.

The band continued their performance by playing hits from their new album, including All and The Beginning. During their rendition of Crack the Shutters, lead singer Lightbody amusingly forgot the lyrics and asked the crowd for their help. This was a humourous moment between Lightbody and the audience, creating a true highlight of the night.

Taking a moment to shift away from their earlier songs’ upbeat, positive energy, the band captivated audiences with their sixth track, Set Fire to the Third Bar. As the beautiful melodic duet unfolded, a stunning visual display featuring Martha Wainwright illuminated the screens.

Next came the song that skyrocketed Snow Patrol into the forefront of the music scene, Run, which was released over 25 years prior. 25 years on, and they’ve still got it!

Lightbody recalls how they wrote the song in their Glasgow apartment, when they had run out of electricity and couldn’t afford more. The heartwarming ballad saw the arena shine with phone torches, as fans united in a powerful, collective sing-along, creating an unforgettable moment of connection and nostalgia.

Before playing their iconic Open Your Eyes, from their 2006 album Eyes Shut, Lightbody explained that their lead guitarist, Johnny McDaid, had injured his hand, trapping it in a train door and subsequently underwent surgery.

This made his performance even more impressive, showcasing the professionalism and immense talent of the world-renowned band.

As the end of the performance drew near, fans began to stir with anticipation, eagerly awaiting the playing of Chasing Cars. Snow Patrol did not disappoint.

The arena erupted with energy as fans leapt to their feet, linking arms, singing along to the melodic tune. It was a heartwarming experience that united both older and younger fans.

The concert concluded with the powerful songs You’re All I Have and Just Say Yes.

Fans won’t have to wait long for another chance to hear them live, as they are scheduled to perform at TRNSMT in July.
