Taking to the stage on the sold-out European leg of their tour, Twenty One Pilots announced live their release of Doubt (Demo), along with a performance of the track to their audience in Łódź, Poland, after massive fan demand. The full track was originally featured on their 6-time platinum album, Blurryface, which has its 10th year anniversary next month.
The track is accompanied by an official video which features early live show footage of the band from their 2015 tour. Grainy and raw with flashing lights, it truly is a throwback to the fans who were in attendance. The sentimental call back only highlights how far this band has grown, their fanbase stronger than ever, and going from humble beginnings to now selling out stadiums, some with a 65,00 capacity, all around the world.
The track features the familiar notes and lyrics we know and love, with a raw and unapologetic twist. Key highlights of the track include mental health, self-doubt and the fear of being forgotten. An echoing feature repeats after each word for Joseph, a notable difference from the full version where this feature was much more subtle. The instrumental is familiar and hints to the original track, but with a less polished feel, however this only gives us an insight into the progression of the track, and how it was developed and built upon, to the Doubt we know and love from the Blurryface album.
The lyrics of the track are different, placed in a different format, and most notably, the verses are swapped and in a varied order to the full track from the album. The demo starts with ‘Temperature is dropping… I’m not sure if I can see this ever stopping’, whereas the full track has these lyrics for the opening the second verse. This is also shown where a verse has become the bridge for the full release. It’s a behind-the-scenes dive into how this track was changed, and ideas moved, to fit for the perfect song.
After being tipped off by his mom, Tyler Joseph became aware the original demo version of Doubt was going ‘viral’ on TikTok. Speaking with fellow band member Josh Dun, ‘You know I still have that demo version just chilling on a hard drive’, they decided they were going to release the demo in full.
Twenty One Pilots are currently on the band’s biggest tour to date, The Clancy World Tour. With such a dedicated fanbase that no doubt have a huge love for this track, and from an album that shot the band to viral success, with multiple record setting, and a GRAMMY win, it’s no wonder this announcement was met with huge applause and cheering from their Polish audience in person, and all around the world.
Blurryface celebrates its 10th anniversary on the 17th of May, and with over 15 billion global streams to date – it truly is a fan favourite.
Doubt (Demo) is out now everywhere.
